The SAP AII solution landscape consists of two important distinctions i.e. the “physical” world and the “virtual” world.

In the physical world you have the tags or 2D barcode labels, the readers and device management software/hardware that deals with raw data as it sensed and read. These areas are handled by companies other than SAP (hardware companies & other partners of SAP).

In the virtual world (the right-most three boxes), the AutoID Infrastructure (AII), Exchange Infrastructure (XI) and back-end enterprise applications like SAP ERP.

Data is captured from the tags and 2D barcodes by the readers, which are managed by a device management software / hardware. This data is sent to AII which adds business context to the data and is then passed to XI, which will route it to the appropriate module of SAP.
